Sulfur and Chloride Analyzers From XOS

Method and Compliance

Sindie analyzers are compliant with ASTM Standard D-7039 and are widely recognized as the preferred method for measuring sulfur concentration in liquid hydrocarbon samples and streams.

Sindie 7039 complies with ASTM Standard D-7039. Sindie 7039 meets or exceeds the performance of other X-ray fluorescence-based ISO and ASTM test methods including ISO 20884, for the measurement of sulfur in refinery fuels.

Technology - Monochromatic Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (MWD XRF)

The Sindie sulfur analyzer is used to determine the total sulfur in gasoline, diesel fuels, and other petroleum products. The analyzer employs a method based on focused monochromatic excitation wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (MWDXRF) spectrometry to measure sulfur content. The Sindie MWDXRF analyzer engine configuration is below.
Monochromatic WDXRF using doubly curved crystal optics
The Sindie technique employs a low-power X-ray tube, a point-focusing doubly-curved crystal (DCC) optic for excitation, a sample cell, a second focusing DCC optic for collection, and an X-ray detector. The first point focusing optic captures a narrow bandwidth of X-rays from the source and focuses this intense monochromatic beam to a small spot on the fuel sample cell. The monochromatic beam excites the sample and secondary characteristic fluorescence X-rays are emitted. The second collection optic collects only the characteristic sulfur X-rays emitted from the small spot sample and focuses them onto the detector. This configuration offers several advantages over conventional WDXRF systems. The signal-to-background is improved by using the monochromatic excitation of the X-ray source characteristic line. The focusing ability of the collection optic allows using a small-area X-ray counter detector which results in low detector noise and enhanced reliability. Monochromatic excitation also provides simplified quantification and matrix effect correction. This technique enables robust low-maintenance analyzers with dramatically lower detection limits and faster response times.

Sindie 7039 Gen 3 Bench-Top

The Sindie® 7039 Bench-Top model is specifically designed for fast batch testing from 0.4 – 3000 ppm (wt.) sulfur fuel samples at petroleum pipeline terminals, refineries, and test laboratories. The unit is compact and fits on any lab bench with an easy-to-use and robust design for industrial and laboratory use with minimal maintenance. The Sindie analyzer has many advantages over competing technologies. The analyzer has exceptional signal-to-noise using monochromatic excitation of the X-ray source characteristic line. It does not require consumable gases or high temperature operations improving the analyzer’s robustness and reliability.
Sindie 7039 Bench-Top complies with ASTM Standard D-7039. Sindie 7039 Bench-Top meets or exceeds the performance of other X-ray fluorescence-based ISO and ASTM test methods including ISO 20884, for the measurement of sulfur in refinery fuels. This method is accepted in ASTM D975 for Diesel fuel and D6751 for Biodiesel.

The main features of the Sindie-7039 bench-top analyzer include:

  • Direct measurement without sample conversion; Analysis in ppm (wt)
  • LOD : 0.4 ppm
  • Dynamic Range: 0.4 ppm to 3000 ppm
  • Outstanding linearity: One calibration for diesel and gasoline matrixes over full dynamic range
  • Fast measurement time: 300 seconds
  • No consumable gases required
  • Extremely low maintenance

Clora Bench-Top

The chloride bench-top analyzer is a breakthrough analytical solution for the determination of chlorides in liquid hydrocarbon samples such as aromatics, distillates and heavy fuels, as well as aqueous solutions. Using the same Monochromatic WD XRF analytical technique as the widely accepted line of SINDIE analyzers, Clora provides a limit of detection of 0.15ppm and a dynamic range up to 3000 ppm. This direct measurement technique does not require gasses or involve high temperature processes which results in unprecedented ease-of-use and minimum maintenance requirements.
Precise determination of chlorides is critical during refining processes and for prevention of pipeline corrosion. Chlorides may poison expensive catalysts and may lead to corrosion in overhead or reactor effluent systems as well as pipeline corrosion. Alternative methods, such as microcoulometry and ion chromatography, for determination of chlorides at levels below 1 ppm involve cumbersome sample preparation and/or combustion processes. This ultimately leads to extended operator involvement, longer measurement times, increased consumables and complexity and increased maintenance. Clora enables the user to quantify chloride concentration below 0.5 ppm levels, without the difficulties of consumable gasses, or elevated temperature processes.
